What is Personal Development and How Can it Help Me?

It's a fair question right? It's like everywhere you turn right now people are talking about personal development. But what exactly is it? If we were to look at it metaphorically, let's say that you are looking at a car, now not all cars are created the same, or even handle the same, people can be a bit like that too sometimes, I am sure you would have heard the saying that 'you're unique, just like everyone else.' That may well be true, but as with our car, the same fundamental principles exist. In order for a internal combustion engine to operate in the correct fashion it, requires to have three keys factors, it must have fuel, an ignition source and oxygen (which of course makes up the fire triangle) Now with these key fundamentals in place our engine will run, it may not run for long as there are a few other elements that are needed in the likes of a lubricant to ensure that the friction caused by the heat does not cause any lasting damage.
So if you transitioned this example into life how would it look? As you grow you learn, you go to school (well most of us anyway) you get an education and you get on with life. Great. The problem with that is, that as you do this you develop a level of experiential knowledge, which is great if you continue your education, (this need not be a formal education), however most people don't continue. People gain an operational level of knowledge and believe (more often because that's what they think society expects of them) that this is more than enough to get by, and to be fair this is true....to an extent. This is like having the fuel, ignition source and oxygen and nothing else, now as stated the engine will run for a little while without any other element before it breaks down for one reason or another. OK, so you go off with this very intermediate level of knowledge and then fumble your way through life. Operating with the basics and getting by. All of the people that continue in this fashion are generally the people you see or hear talking about how bad it is and other dis-empowering dialogues with people.
So with this example, Personal Development is like the other elements, the lubricants the servicing, all of the other things that are need to ensure that a car or engine is always in top condition. It is not something that is optional it is something that if you are serious about creating an outstanding future for yourself is mandatory. Even Donald Trump is a student of personal development, yes that's right, this multi billionaire studies and continues his personal growth, even he writes his goals daily, coincidence? I think not.
How can personal development help you? I think a better question might be, 'how bad is it going to get if you don't become a student?' My futures bright, how does yours look?
So in essence, personal development is the servicing and maintenance of your mind body and soul, what are you worth?
